The Different Types of Magnesium—and How to Choose the Right One

Magnesium is involved in hundreds of processes throughout the body, including normal muscle and nerve function, energy production, electrolyte balance, bone health and protein synthesis. But when shopping for a magnesium supplement, one question comes up repeatedly:

Which type of magnesium should I take?

Magnesium supplements come in several forms, and the molecule attached to magnesium can influence its absorption, digestive effects, elemental magnesium content and how the supplement is typically used.

There is no single form that is automatically best for everyone. Here is how the most popular options compare.

Why Does the Form of Magnesium Matter?

On a supplement label, magnesium is normally attached to another compound such as glycine, citric acid, malic acid or threonic acid.

Magnesium bisglycinate, also commonly called magnesium glycinate, consists of magnesium bound to the amino acid glycine.

  • People with sensitive digestion
  • Those wanting magnesium without a strong laxative effect

Bisglycinate has become one of the most popular forms because it generally provides a good combination of absorption and digestive tolerance.

Glycine itself is an amino acid involved in the nervous system, which is one reason this form is commonly found in nighttime magnesium formulas.

A 2025 randomized, placebo-controlled study involving 155 adults with poor sleep found that 250 mg per day of elemental magnesium from magnesium bisglycinate produced a modest improvement in insomnia severity over four weeks compared with placebo. The effect was relatively small, so magnesium should not be viewed as a sleeping medication, but the findings provide some support for its common use in evening routines.

Best fit:

A strong general-purpose choice, particularly when digestive tolerance and evening use are priorities.

Magnesium Citrate — Absorbable and Helpful for Bowel Regularity

Magnesium citrate combines magnesium with citric acid.

It is one of the better-studied forms of magnesium and has consistently demonstrated good solubility and absorption.

A randomized controlled study comparing magnesium citrate, magnesium oxide and a magnesium amino-acid chelate found citrate produced greater measures of magnesium bioavailability than magnesium oxide.

Often chosen for:

  • General magnesium supplementation
  • People who experience occasional constipation
  • Those wanting a well-absorbed and relatively affordable form

The important distinction with citrate is its effect on the digestive tract. Magnesium can draw water into the intestines, and citrate is more likely than bisglycinate to loosen stools at higher doses.

For someone dealing with constipation, that may actually be an advantage. For someone who already has frequent loose stools, it may not be the ideal choice.

Best fit:

General magnesium support with an added bowel-regularity benefit.

Magnesium Malate — Popular for Muscles and Active Lifestyles

Magnesium malate combines magnesium with malic acid, a compound naturally present in foods such as apples and involved in cellular energy metabolism.

Often chosen for:

  • Active individuals
  • Muscle-focused formulas
  • Daytime magnesium supplementation
  • General energy metabolism support

Magnesium itself contributes to normal energy metabolism and muscle function, while malic acid participates in pathways involved in cellular energy production.

This has made magnesium malate popular among athletes and people looking for a magnesium supplement to take earlier in the day.

There is evidence that magnesium from magnesium citrate-malate compounds is bioavailable, but there are far fewer high-quality human studies directly demonstrating that magnesium malate provides unique benefits over other well-absorbed magnesium forms.

Animal studies have produced interesting findings regarding malate absorption and tissue availability, but these should not be treated as proof that magnesium malate is superior in humans.

Best fit:

A reasonable daytime option, particularly for active people, although claims that malate dramatically increases energy are ahead of the current human research.

Magnesium Taurate — Magnesium Combined With Taurine

Magnesium taurate combines magnesium with taurine, an amino-acid-like compound concentrated in tissues including the heart, muscles and nervous system.

  • General magnesium supplementation
  • People interested in both magnesium and taurine

Both magnesium and taurine independently have important physiological roles, which has made the combination particularly interesting to researchers studying cardiovascular health.

Research specifically examining magnesium taurate in humans is still limited compared with citrate or bisglycinate.

A recently published 2026 observational study evaluated a combination of magnesium taurate and potassium citrate in adults with elevated blood pressure and reported improvements after three months. However, because there was no placebo control and participants were also given lifestyle counselling, the study cannot establish that magnesium taurate itself was responsible for the changes.

Best fit:

An interesting specialty form for people who specifically want magnesium combined with taurine, but the evidence for unique benefits remains less established than some marketing claims suggest.

Magnesium L-Threonate — The Brain-Focused Magnesium

Magnesium L-threonate is magnesium bound to L-threonic acid, a metabolite related to vitamin C.

This is one of the more unusual—and typically more expensive—forms of magnesium.

  • Cognitive-focused supplementation
  • Evening routines
  • Healthy aging
  • People specifically interested in emerging brain-related magnesium research

Magnesium L-threonate gained attention after preclinical research suggested it may be particularly effective at increasing magnesium concentrations in the nervous system.

Human research is now beginning to develop.

A 2024 randomized controlled trial involving adults with self-reported sleep problems found that magnesium L-threonate supplementation improved several subjective measures of sleep and daytime functioning, although results were not uniformly positive across every measurement.

More recently, a 2026 randomized, placebo-controlled trial reported improvements in several measures of cognitive performance after six weeks of magnesium L-threonate supplementation, including working memory and reaction time. However, some outcomes did not differ from placebo, and this remains an emerging area of research rather than definitive evidence that L-threonate is universally better for brain health.

One practical consideration is that magnesium L-threonate products often provide less elemental magnesium per capsule than forms such as citrate or bisglycinate.

Best fit:

Someone specifically interested in the emerging research around cognition, the nervous system and sleep, rather than someone simply trying to get the most magnesium for their money.

What About Magnesium Oxide?

Magnesium oxide is one of the most common forms used in inexpensive supplements because it contains a high percentage of elemental magnesium.

The trade-off is absorption.

Both the NIH and comparative studies indicate that magnesium oxide is generally less soluble and less bioavailable than forms such as citrate.

It can also have a stronger laxative effect, which is why magnesium oxide is sometimes used specifically for bowel regularity.

That doesn't make oxide useless, but for someone primarily interested in maximizing magnesium absorption, citrate or a chelated form will often make more sense.

So, Which Magnesium Should You Choose?

For most people, the decision can be simplified:

For general daily magnesium:
Magnesium bisglycinate or citrate.

For nighttime use or sensitive digestion:
Magnesium bisglycinate.

For constipation or bowel regularity:
Magnesium citrate.

For an active lifestyle or daytime use:
Magnesium malate.

For magnesium combined with taurine:
Magnesium taurate.

For cognitive-focused supplementation:
Magnesium L-threonate.

There is also nothing inherently wrong with combining forms. Some magnesium supplements use multiple forms to provide different characteristics within one formula.

Don't Forget About Elemental Magnesium

One of the biggest mistakes people make when comparing magnesium supplements is looking only at the amount of the magnesium compound.

What matters nutritionally is elemental magnesium.

For example, 2,000 mg of magnesium bisglycinate does not mean that the product supplies 2,000 mg of magnesium. The Supplement Facts or Canadian product label should specify how much actual magnesium is provided per serving.

The NIH specifically notes that supplement labels declare the amount of elemental magnesium rather than the total weight of the magnesium compound.

That is the number you should use when comparing products.

The Bottom Line

Magnesium is not a one-form-fits-all supplement.

For someone simply looking for a high-quality everyday option, magnesium bisglycinate is difficult to beat because of its combination of good tolerance and versatility. Magnesium citrate is another excellent choice, particularly when bowel regularity is also desired.
